5 Skin Care Resolutions Everyone Should Make

It’s a new year and you’re probably making mental resolutions to exercise more, eat better or be a nicer person. These are the typical promises we make ourselves every year that we hope we keep past a few weeks. To change things up a bit, what about doing something that helps you and others at the same time? Here are 5 easy things you can do to improve your hygiene and skin care and to help the public by reducing the spread of germs.

1. Always Wash Your Hands with Soap
Did you know that  1 in 5 people admit to not washing their hands after using the washroom and only 30% use soap! Don’t be one of them this year by making a commitment to proper handwashing every time.  Next time you go to wash your hands, pretend someone is watching you and judging. Chances are they are! Apply soap then some water and lather your hands for at least 20 seconds before washing them off with water. Don’t worry if you have no hot water, handwashing is just as effective with cold water if you use soap.

2. Always Wash Your Hands Before and After These Activities
Remember what your mother told you when you were a kid? Wash your hands before you eat! But now as an adult, how often do you do it? Washing your hands at key moments is important in avoiding things like foodborne illness such as norovirus. Clean your hands before you eat, after you eat, after you use the restroom, before touching your face, mouth or eyes and after touching your pet. For parents, reminding your children to wash their hands right when they get home from school can help everyone from getting a nasty family bug.
3. Always Sneeze in the Crook of Your Elbow
Don’t you hate when someone sneezes without covering their mouth and you can just feel their germs fly everywhere? What about when they cover their mouth and then touch the door handle or want to shake your hand? Set a good example this year by sneezing or coughing into the crook of your arm or a tissue instead. It minimizes the number of germs that spread and you’ll look politer than the other guys.
4. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Whether it’s the dry winter weather or the hot summer days, most people complain of having dry skin at some point in the year. Incorporating moisturizer into your daily routine can stave off dry skin and make you feel better. Try to remember to apply moisturizer after you shower or bathe, as water will dry out your skin. Other good times to slap on the lotion is before bed and after you wash your hands. Skip the pretty smelling lotions that contain all sorts of ingredients but are not effective and look for lotions that are free of perfume or dyes.
5. Always Use Paper Towel to Dry Your Hands
Numerous studies have shown that paper towels are far more effective at drying and removing germs than the hot air dryer. Not to mention they are far more sanitary! Hot air dryers are notorious for blowing out the germs floating around the washroom right back onto your hands! Very counter-productive since you’ve just washed your hands. An added benefit is that you can use the paper towel to open the door, thus avoiding more germs on the way out.

New Year’s resolutions are notoriously dropped after a few months so try to think of these as a lifestyle change instead and make them a habit going forward. Not only will you BE more hygienic, you’ll make a good impression on your friends and colleagues, and that is infectious!
